C. Walter Byrd passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at the Carriage Club Assisted Living Facility in Charlotte, N.C. Walter was born February 29, 1920 to Walter Pierce and Zula Tomlinson Byrd. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Evelyn and Lois Byrd, who were longtime residents of Lillington. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1941, and upon graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served out of Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theater during Word War II. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Major, having won the Air Force Cross for Bravery. He married Betty Black of Wake Forest, N.C., on June 2, 1945. He moved to Charlotte to work for N.C. Equipment Company and Blythe Construction Company before joining Mitchell Distributing Co., where he worked for 25 years before retiring in 1985.

A graveside service was held Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Harnett Memorial Park in Lillington

He is survived by his three children Jean (Al) Allison, Tom (Maria) Byrd and Andy (Reet) Byrd; six grandchildren, Amanda Byrd [Matt Chambers], Ashley Byrd, Dana Byrd, Aleks Byrd, Lauren Allison Deese and Adam [Natalie] Allison; two great grandchildren, Haley Allison and Porter Allison.
