Fuquay-Varina High School’s auditorium bustled with excited students, families and supporters Feb. 26 as 40 students were inducted into the National Achievers Society.

The ceremony celebrated and recognized students from minority groups who have worked hard to achieve high standards in their “school, in their community and in their lives” and have maintained a 3.0 GPA. Since 1998, 10,000 American students have received recognition and membership into NAS. A team of members, parents, organizations, communities and schools work in unison to promote the importance of education and achievement with students.

Their initiative is “Achievement Matters” and they work with the students to achieve their goals “to excel both academically and culturally.” Support from the Parent Advisory Board is lead by chairperson Regina Terry, vice chairperson Selena Bowe and treasurer Glenda Walston.

Kristopher Watson began the ceremony, leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Kristopher Watson, followed by an inspirational thought from Halimah Abu-Hassan, greetings from Shannon Walston and Mrs. Phyllis McLeod and the history of the organization as told by NAS Sponsor Tricia G. Myers.

An introduction of the charges by Mr. James Street began the second segment of the ceremony. Terry also proclaimed the Parent Booster Club’s commitment to the success of the NAS members.

Elizabeth Boney challenged the students, reminding them that success is brought about by readiness “to sacrifice their time and build up their mind frame toward success.” Rather than be influenced by the environment, they “should control the happenings” surrounding them. Life is a “challenge, a channel of discovery and innovation, a prospect for success and a gateway to wealth.”

The charge to maintain qualities of honesty, achievement, responsibility, vision and enthusiasm were defined as members lit a candle for each. Tiffany Terry, on behalf of the inductees, accepted the challenge.

The NAS Litany was led by Elizabeth Boney.

“I am excellent. I am excellent. I am excellent. My mind is a pearl. I can do anything. Anything my mind can conceive, I can achieve. Anything my mind can conceive and my heart can believe, I can achieve. I am excellent. I am excellent. I am a National Achiever.”
