RALEIGH – Gov. Bev Perdue joins the N.C. Council for Women (CFW) in encouraging all North Carolina citizens to recognize the significant contributions of women to American life in honor of the 90th anniversary of Women’s Equality Day – and to celebrate their accomplishments by participating in the upcoming N.C. Governor’s Conference for Women, to be held Nov. 9 in Raleigh.

“Much like the courageous women whose suffrage led to the 19th Amendment right to vote, we too have an extraordinary opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of women,” Gov. Perdue said. “The Conference will cover a wide range of pertinent topics, from career and financial management to sustainable practices, health and emotional well-being, and learning how to provide effective advocacy to assist worthwhile causes.”

The Governor has proclaimed Thursday as Women’s Equality Day in North Carolina. The event marks the day in 1920 when the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote. The process began in 1869, when Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony formed the National Woman Suffrage Association. The U.S. Congress declared Aug. 26 as Women’s Equality Day in 1971.

The N.C. Governor’s Conference for Women will be held at the Raleigh Convention Center. Keynote speakers include the Governor, the author Sapphire, financial guru Jean Chatsky and Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Sheryl WuDunn.

Program, registration and scholarship information is available on the Conference website: www.ncwomensconference.com. The N.C. Council for Women is a division of the N.C. Department of Administration and a partner in the N.C. Governor’s Conference for Women.
