Bengals junior, Ricky Ferguson ran for two scores and caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Fuquay junior quarterback, Evan McNeil on Friday night against Knightdale High. And that would have been plenty as the Bengals defense blanked Knightdale through three quarters on the way to a 40-7 Fuquay-Varina season-opening win.
But, Ferguson got lots of help from some familiar sources. Senior running back, Cory Hunter got things started for Fuquay with two first quarter touchdown runs on the way to 175 rushing yards on the night. Senior wingback, Eric Powell also found the end zone on a 10-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Ferguson piled up 115 rushing yards and 62 receiving yards in the game.
Next up for Fuquay is Friday night’s home opener against longtime rival, Clayton. The past two years, the Comets have found ways with their Wing-T, ball-control offense and 5-4 defense to keep the Fuquay offense somewhat contained. The Bengals won in 2008 and 2009 but scored only 7 and 14 points in those contests. Clayton is coming off a 33-13 win over Cardinal Gibbons. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bengals Stadium.
