Fuquay-Varina coach, Ryan Habich said there will be plenty of jobs available as he’s only got eight starters returning from a Bengals team that went 11-3 in 2009, and advanced to the third round of the 4AA state playoffs.
“Things are going well,” Habich said. “We’ve got a lot of kids who did a good job training in the offseason.”
He said the program entered this week with 111 players remaining, and he and his staff would fill out the final JV and varsity rosters following a Thursday night, multi-team scrimmage at Clayton High.
Fuquay will square off against Southeast Raleigh and then Harnett Central, both of the Greater Neuse River conference, in sessions beginning at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Habich said the Bengals staff likes to get a look at a lot of personnel during scrimmage opportunities like Thursday’s.
“Every kid is going to get a chance to play,” Habich said. “We try to get a lot of kids on film, and see how they respond in game situations.”
One player that Habich won’t be watching early this season is 6-foot-3, 317-pound North Carolina recruit, Shaun Underwood. A starter on both the offensive and defensive lines last fall, Underwood is rehabbing an old leg injury. However, he may not miss as much as five weeks of the season as originally feared. Habich said Underwood would definitely sit out the season-opener at Knightdale High on August 20.
With Underwood out, Habich said a lot of other guys are getting plenty of reps on the lines this preseason. And with just one experienced linemen returning on each side of the ball, the new Bengals need to get up to speed quickly.
