Owner Tammi Eggers says she has been overwhelmed by the response she’s gotten since opening Peddlers Thrift Mall only three weeks ago.
“Everyone seems to be excited, and the compliments we’ve been given have been great,” she said.
Eggers, a lifelong Cleveland resident, has also spent nearly a lifetime of making treasures out of other people’s castoffs.
“I enjoy it. It’s a hobby for me, and it’s been the love of my life for about 25 years, to buy and resell,” she said. “I’m a thrifty shopper myself. I buy most of my clothing and housewares from garage sales and thrift shops.”
Eggers owned an antique mall in Selma for several years called “Collected Treasures.”
“Due to the economy, people are just not buying higher end or antiques, so I decided to downsize and move closer to home,” she said. “One door closed, and another one opened. It’s just been a blessing.”
Eggers is now sharing her finds with the community. Every item on the floor is hand picked, collected from Eggers’ hunts at garage and estate sales, as well as from individuals who call her to come out and look at their unwanted items. As such, she doesn’t accept drop off donations.
“I hand pick every item so I can make sure it’s gently worn or new and clean,” she said.
“I want to keep it clean. I would rather buy from the public versus taking their donations. That way, I can select what I want.”
The store carries infant to adult sizes in clothing, shoes and accessories, furniture, housewares, books, decorations, tools, hunting, fishing and sporting goods. There will also be a coffee brewery shop coming soon.
Eggers also rents out space in the mall to consignors. There are currently five consigned areas within the mall that offer various merchandise, including handbags and costume jewelry, home decorating items, needlepoint crafts and housewares, prayer pillows, handmade jewelry and teacher supplies.
“People come in and say, ‘this is not a thrift mall, this is a boutique,’ but I want to keep it thrifty as far as price,” said Eggers. “It’s very clean, organized and affordable. We try to carry anything a man, woman or child would want or need.”
The store inventory is constantly changing, with new items being put on the floor daily. For recurring customer Tania Porter of Cleveland, that has been one of the biggest attractions.
“I kept driving by, wondering when it was going to be open. The day it opened I was here, and I loved it, and I still love it, and I keep coming back,” she said. “They have very reasonable prices, good merchandise and new things in every day.”
Eggers personally sees to it there is always new merchandise, scouring yard sales in Cleveland and even Holly Springs, Cary and Apex, every weekend. She says she has an 1,800 square foot building behind her home stocked with merchandise for the store.
Eggers is on hand seven days a week to run the shop, but she says she never could have gotten it off the ground without the help of her boyfriend, sister and other helpers.
“I’ve been really impressed with the excitement and the feedback from the neighborhood. I hope to be here to serve the community for a long time to come,” said Eggers.
During the holidays, Peddlers will be staying open longer and doing gift wrapping as well.
The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Peddlers Thrift Mall is located in Peddler’s Village at 5533 Hwy 42 W, Suite D80. For more information on the store or to have Eggers view items you’d like to sell, call (919) 661-6848 or e-mail neenstreasures@aol.com.
