A special event is called “Diggin’ at the Garden Hut” and some 13 children and their families participated in the latest Potato Dig at the Hut in a program directed by Hut Owner Nelsa Cox who shared potatoes from the vegetable garden located at 1004 Old Honeycutt Road in Fuquay-Varina.

It’s one of a wide variety of topics offered by the Hut including Walking Plant Tours to help gardeners of all levels learn new interesting facts visually.

As for the recent “Diggin” project, Cox helped the children dig their own potato from the plant in the vegetable garden and learn a little bit about how vegetables grow.

“They thought it was more fun than an Easter Egg Hunt,” she commented, noting that learning potatoes are in the nightshade family, just like tomatoes, was interesting. After everyone dug their potatoes to take home and had refreshments, the focus turned to worms.

“Plant clinics make it easy for any style of gardener to bring samples, questions and open discussions about plants, soils, disease of insects, as well as plant culture and plant life,” she emphasized.

Another offering for planting at the Hut was Carol Stein’s Gardeners Forum on “Composting”. The children were intrigued, especially when Carol’s dad, “Poppy” Jack Holland showed his worm bin. Over 25 people participated in the forum and talked about how worms, people, and nature make compost. “Educational Forums,” Cox went on, “draw groups of customers to be informed on a multitude of topics, learning from discussions, hand-outs, visuals and participation.”

She cited the Potato Dig and other topics just for the children are also for parents as well. “It’s the time to experience, teach, learn and explore this wonderful area of Fuquay-Varina and all the possibilities of Grow-N-Eat plants and cut flowers, dancing butterfly gardens, flowers that grandma had and so much more,” she smiled.

A special Plant Walk & Problem Diagnosis that took place this past Saturday at 11 a.m. was designed to help those who were asked to bring samples in sealed bags discuss plant problems. The hour-long program covered questioning on a variety of plants.

“The staff and horticulturists at the Garden Hut are happy to help you solve your garden problems anytime,” Nelsa Cox said.
