Welcome Class of 2014
Warm summer greetings to the FVHS class of 2014! We are excited to have each of you visit the campus of your high school in a few weeks to meet new friends and see old ones. You will also have the chance to meet your teachers and some upperclassmen who will be here helping out. We are planning lots of fun activities to help us all get to know each other better and help you learn your way around our campus before the first day of school, Wednesday, Aug. 25. We hope that Freshman Camp will be the first of many successful experiences that you have at FVHS! Visit the School Website for more information: http://fvhs.wcpss.net Register for Freshman Camp
Registration is recommended: Go to http://fvhs.wcpss.net and click on Freshman Camp 2010. We are excited to have a new group activity this year called Drum for Change with Greg Whitt…WHY DRUM? IT’S EASY, EDUCATIONAL, AND FUN.
Group drumming participants are connected to a common purpose by sharing rhythm experiences with others. Drumming can be utilized as a vehicle for education, to encourage cultural awareness, to embrace diversity, and to promote harmony in the local community. Drumming together promotes cooperation, understanding, and the long-forgotten tradition of making music with our family, friends, and neighbors. While drumming, participants are practicing principles of teamwork and collaborative music making. We’re also developing listening skills, motor skills, and an appreciation for others in the group. Plus, we’re creating a sense of belonging, community, and unity. http://www.drumforchange.com
In addition to Drum for Change, we will continue our challenging and fun-filled Team Building activities, custom designed for Freshman Camp by our very own FVHS teachers. These activities are a favorite at Freshman Camp and are designed to build leadership skills while providing lots of fun for all participants. Be sure to dress for physical activity!
Attendance for Freshman Camp will depend on the first letter of your last name. Please try to attend the designated day. If you are coming on a different day, please contact us ahead of time by calling our Freshman Academy director Rob Morrison at 557-2967 or email at rmorrison@wcpss.net. Our goal is for every freshman to feel like he/she is a part of our Bengal family when school starts. During Freshman Camp, you will have the opportunity to:
• Tour the School
•Meet incoming Freshmen for our class of 2014
•Participate in team-building activities
•Receive information about Freshman Classes, Clubs, Athletics, and other School Programs
•Participate in a Question and Answer Session with Upper Classmen
• Make New Friends
• Have Fun! Parent Orientation Session
Each morning of Freshman Camp, we will offer a Parent Orientation Meeting. Join us for an informational session in the auditorium to learn more about our Late Arrival Schedule, student expectations, how to register for SPAN, school policies and requirements, bus information, and other helpful suggestions for your ninth grade student.
Each parent orientation corresponds with your child’s attendance date and begins at 8:30 a.m. each day and will last approximately 45 minutes. Light refreshments will be provided. Late Arrival and Professional Learning Teams
What is Late Arrival?
FVHS asked for and received permission to delay the start of school for students once a week to allow teachers time to collaborate and plan with other teachers who teach the same subject. This time will be spent working on ways to better meet and effectively address students’ needs. When is Late Arrival?
Late Arrival will be every Tuesday beginning on September 14th unless otherwise notified. Students who drive, walk or can find a ride to school, do not need to arrive to school until 8:00 a.m. Students who ride the bus will be given the choice of study hall, using the Media Center to work on a school related project, or the opportunity to buy breakfast in the cafeteria. Only students buying and eating breakfast will be permitted in the cafeteria. All others must report to the study hall or the Media Center.
Much of our great success here at Fuquay-Varina High School can be attributed to Professional Learning Teams and the outstanding faculty that work so hard to help our students.
