Fuquay-Varina police release more details in shooting case

Fuquay-Varina Police are investigating a shooting that occurred today at 701 East Maple Lane, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526.

Officers were dispatched to a shooting call at 10:07 am today at 701 East Maple Lane in Fuquay-Varina. The victim, William Columbus Martin 40, was driven to Fire Station 1 on East Vance Street for medical attention prior to being transported to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh for a gun shot wound. Martin’s gun shot wound is not life threatening.

The shooting apparently started over an argument of the suspect, Gregory Carver Higgs, 37 (unknown home address) being at the residence after being told not to be there.

The suspect, Higgs, shot at Martin several times striking him once in the left foot. Higg’s then barricaded himself in the home at 701 East Maple Lane. Officer’s had surrounded the home and heard a single gun shot at 10:46 am. A request was made for Wake County Sheriffs Officer Special Response Team to respond. When Wake County official’s responded to assist entry was made into the home. The suspect Gregory Higgs was located in the crawl space of the home with what appeared to be a single self inflicted gun shot wound. Emergency Medical Service Personnel were on scene and pronounced Higg’s was deceased.

Investigators are continuing to work on this case.
