Lunch Bunch focuses on classical music

The next performance scheduled for the 26th season of Music for the Lunch Bunch series is Wednesday, June 23 at 12:15 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield. Dr. Don Parker will perform on percussion and Dr. Sheryl Linch-Parker will perform on trumpet.

Dr. Sheryl Linch-Parker, Assistant Professor of Music (High Brass and Music Education) has actively pursued a career in the field of trumpet performance and music education since she started playing the trumpet. Prior to her appointment at Fayetteville State University, she has taught as a band director for the Hazelwood Public Schools (St. Louis, MO.) where she directed five elementary bands for the past three years. Her ensembles have been invited to perform at Powell Symphony Hall for the E. Desmond Lee Music Collaborative and the State PTA conference in 2002.

As a performer, Dr. Linch-Parker currently performs contemporary and traditional chamber literature in the trumpet/percussion duo, Double Take, which has released a new self-titled CD. Double Take has presented numerous concerts/clinics throughout the Mid-West and has received favorable reviews from the Percussive Arts Society and The International Trumpet Guild. Dr. Linch-Parker also plays trumpet in the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and the Boulevard Brass Quintet.

Dr. Don N. Parker, a native of Washington D.C., has been involved in total percussion playing in a variety of styles and genres. Over the years, Don has performed with artists such as Ellis Marsalis, Marchel Ivery, James Polk, Mark Whitfield, Ray Barretto, Oliver Lake, Buster Cooper, the Arianna String Quartet, and Jeff Jarvis to name a few.

Dr. Parker currently performs contemporary and traditional chamber literature with his trumpet/percussion duo, Double Take, which has a self-titled CD through PL Productions and his jazz vibes and piano duo, The Haydon/Parker Duo, which has a CD on the ACA Digital Recording Label, entitled “My Foolish Heart”. Both recordings have received favorable reviews by the Percussive Arts Society and the International Trumpet Guild. Don is also a principal timpanist/percussionist with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra.

The Music for the Lunch Bunch is a series of summer concerts held every Wednesday featuring local artists performing a variety of music, with particular emphasis on classical music. The concert series is grassroots funded by the Johnston County Arts Council and the North Carolina Arts Council. There is no admission charge but donations are accepted.

Music for the Lunch Bunch will continue on June 30 with Mary Ann Nillson on piano. The performance will begin at 12:15 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Smithfield.
