Sarah Deal never expected to become a published author, but “The Spotless Ladybug,” was recognized by Publish America as a book kids would want to read. She created the book as a school project in 2008 while at Campbell University and the publishing company picked it up as one of their own.

Deal wrote and illustrated the book, which focuses on self-acceptance. “My mom always called me a ladybug when I was little,” Deal said, and she wanted to encourage kids to accept themselves as they are.

Publish America also publishes books written by kids so that the

y can see their own work in print. “They write the books and then get to keep them,” Deal said. She is a third grade teacher at LaFayette Elementary School.

“You’re famous in the grocery store when you’re a teacher anyway,” she said laughing, “now my kids really think I’m famous.”

Holly Grove Elementary School presented a musical perfornance based on “The Spotless Ladybug”. Deal said she plans to write another book. She especially enjoys the art work. “I always have loved to color and draw and be creative,” she said. Her book is available at amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and target.com. Her advice for other writers is, “just go for it!”
