contributed photo The aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown (CV-10), left port May 21st, 1943 in preparation for becoming a leading force destined for battle in the Pacific during World War II. On May 21st, 2010, Boy Scout Troop 614 left Fuquay Varina destined for Patriot’s Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Charleston, SC, the current berth for the USS Yorktown. The 13 scouts from Troop 614, chartered by Fuquay Varina Baptist Church, had the opportunity to sleep & eat aboard the aircraft carrier. They were able to learn about the history of the USS Yorktown and what it took to be a leader during World War II; they took classes in aviation and oceanography and also took an excursion to the South Carolina Aquarium. Aboard the USS Yorktown is the Medal of Honor Museum. This museum tells the story of many Medal of Honor recipients. Hunter S., Senior Patrol Leader for Troop 614, even noted that “Those guys lived up to many of the points in the Scout Law; especially, trustworthy, loyal, helpful, and brave.” In 1943 there were many memories made by those who served on the USS Yorktown and in 2010 there were some new memories made by Boy Scout Troop 614’s visit to such a wonderful piece of history.
