Fuquay-Varina secured the Tri-9’s fifth playoff seed with a 2-0 win at Lee County last week in the regular season finale. Brenna Coolbaugh and Jessie Davis scored for the Bengals and Sylvia Cockerill had an assist. So what reward would await Fuquay in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A state playoffs? How about a date with the top-ranked team in the state, Leesville Road? The Pride, also currently ranked fourth in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, has won the last two 4A state titles.

The Bengals were scheduled to travel to Leesville Road in Raleigh on Tuesday evening after press time.

Fuquay-Varina Softball

The Bengals are wrapping up the regular season slate this week with games against Cary and Garner. Fuquay was scheduled to play Cary in the final Tri-9 game of the season on Tuesday night after press time.

Fuquay dismantled Lee County on Friday night, 10-0. Freshman, Alyssa Dean got the shutout as Alexa Cannon had a double and three RBI. Hannah Wallace hit two doubles and Camise Patterson and Natalie Budde each had a double.

Dean enters this week with a 2.82 ERA and 66 strikeouts on the season. She’s got plenty of offense backing her up. Cannon is batting .405 with 22 RBI. Budde has a .357 average to go with 19 RBI and Wallace is hitting .338. Alyssa White has 21 RBI and a .333 batting average. Heather Ratcliff is batting .313. Lindsey Barrett has a .309 average and Patterson is hitting .303 and has four triples and five steals on the season.

Fuquay will likely grab the third or fourth playoff seed from the Tri-9 conference. The third seed would result in a an opening round matchup with the third seed from the Raleigh area Cap 7 conference. The fourth seed would mean Fuquay would face the second seed from the Cap 7. Pairing will be announced on Monday.
