WCPSS will have 30 students attending the Governor School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem and 27 students attending the Governor School East at Meredith College in Raleigh. The 2010 session runs from June 13 - July 24.
Twenty-two of the WCPSS students are attending for instrumental music, 12 for drama and six for dance. Other students will study math, English, sciences or foreign language.
Students were nominated to attend by their local school superintendents. Each school system was allotted a certain number of nominations based on its 10th- and 11th-grade populations. The Governor's School curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline and does not involve credit, tests or grades.
This is the first year a tuition fee is required for students to attend Governor's School. Due to the state's economic situation, funding to cover program costs was reduced, which resulted in a $500 tuition fee for each student.
Tuition payments are the responsibility of the public school system, charter school or private school that nominated the student. Each school or school system will determine how it will assess and collect the fee.
In Wake County, the Board of Education approved the district paying $250 for each Wake County student selected. Parents will pay the other $250.
The Governor's School of North Carolina, founded in 1963 by former Gov. Terry Sanford, is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas.
