Photo/Michael Browning Rescue crews gathered at the mouth of the Performance Coal Upper Big Branch mine at Birchton in Raleigh County, W.Va., early Monday evening, after an explosion left 25 miners dead and two missing.
Twenty-nine miners were killed in a deadly mine explosion in Montcoal, West Virginia this week. The nation watched news coverage of the event intently as rescuers had hoped that four miners had survived the deadly blast.

However, all hopes were lost when their bodies were discovered in the mine on late Friday.

The death toll makes it the worst U.S. coal mining disaster since a 1970 explosion killed 38 in Hyden, Ky.

Here are pictures from the scene.
