Fuquay Varina High School’s Rock‘N Shop will provide a day full of different musical genres appealing to a wide audience. Our headliner Blues and Rock‘n Roll band will be Drew Questell and the Express.
Sixteen year old Drew Questell is a blues guitarist, vocalist, and harmonica player from Fuquay Varina. He grew up listening to mostly country music on the local radio stations. Around the age of ten, Drew started taking guitar lessons. As time went by, he improved his craft and eventually, his music caught the ear of a local radio host. Through this man, Drew was exposed to the blues in its raw form. He was introduced to John Dee Holeman, the Bull Durham Blues player who inspired Drew to leave country music behind and set his sights on a new genre; the Blues. Since then, Drew has played many venues throughout the triangle area. His music has been heard on the air through NPR radio stations like 88.9FM in Raleigh and 91.5FM in Chapel Hill. Drew has also been featured on NPR ‘s nationally syndicated radio program “The Story with Dick Gordon.” He is currently working with many locally and nationally acclaimed blues artists from around the nation. Drew is also working on his first CD, which he hopes to release sometime this year. The future looks bright for Drew Questell and his music. “I don’t really have a plan for where I want to go with it, I’m just along for the ride.” he says.
The Express is made up of multi-talented, time tested local veteran musicians, including Joel Sugarman on Bass, Alan Celeste on Keys, Kevin Johnson on Drums, and Anthony DiBona on Sax. Together, these five very talented musicians combine to create the best of “hard driving” and “soulful” Blues and Rock n’ Roll.
Drew Questell and the Express, is being sponsored by The Questell Foundation (www.questellfoundation.org), an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and preserving Blues and other traditional music, by lending a helping hand to local and regional musicians who are struggling with financial and/or health related issues. The Questell Foundation also supports other local and regional charities such as the USO, The Wounded Warrior Project, and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
