RALEIGH – The striking faces and special places of North Carolina will soon be appearing at the Harnett County Public Library in Lillington on the “Celebrate North Carolina: Faces and Places” (www.celebrate.nc.gov) photography exhibit tour. An initiative of First Gentleman Bob Eaves, in cooperation with the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncculture.com), the exhibit will be in Harnett County March 25-April 15 and will travel to 30 cities in the state through Feb. 19, 2011.

The exhibition of 30 photographs features four from 2009 N.C. State Fair winners, eight from the State Archives and 18 from members of the N.C. Press Photographers Association. Altogether 27 libraries and three museums will present the quality color and black-and-white images to the people of the state. The State Library of North Carolina (http://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/index.html) invited public libraries to host the exhibit, and museums were invited to ensure broad geographic distribution.

There are images from Cape Lookout, the State Fair, and a beautiful image from Dunn. The 1920 photograph from the State Archives, Large garden party in Dunn, N.C., is from the Lewis White Studio, active in Dunn through the 1940s, and one of more than one million images in the State Archives.

The exhibit started its eastern tour in Smithfield and western tour in Lenoir, and is popular in both venues. Among comments written in Smithfield in a notebook accompanying the exhibit are “All photos tell an amazing story and have powerful emotions (Back with his girls). Love the photography,” and “Very interesting to see people of all ages and walks of life working and playing. Enjoyed this exhibit very much.”

For more information on the exhibit call the Harnett County Library at (910) 893-3446. For information on the tour call (919) 807-7389. The State Archives (http://www.archives.ncdcr.gov/default) and the State Library are within the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, the state agency with the mission to enrich lives and communities, and the vision to harness the state’s cultural resources to build North Carolina’s social, cultural and economic future.
