The 2009-2010 Wake County PTA Council Reflections Awards Celebration was hosted by Holly Springs High School on Wednesday Feb. 24. The theme for this year’s program was “Beauty is…”

All winning artwork was displayed in the cafeteria open area for viewing while guests enjoyed refreshments by Sweet Tomatoes, one of the sponsors for the night. Dance, film and music pieces were played on the four televisions in this area for guests to view. BrickMagic.org, the second sponsor, had a table set up at this time showcasing the upcoming Lego event for everyone to learn more about.

The ceremony began at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. All winners in the six different art categories were called to the stage to receive their trophy and four Wake County winners performed their winning piece.

The National PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program for students. The Reflections Program provides opportunities for prek-12th grade students to express themselves creatively and to receive positive recognition for original works of art inspired by a pre-selected theme, while increasing community awareness on the importance of the arts in education.

The Reflections Program was established in 1969 by National PTA board member Mary Lou Anderson. Since that time, more than 10 million students have participated in the program. The program's longevity and participation figures attest to its strength. The excitement and enthusiasm that the program generates for children, parents, schools and communities is unmatched.

Participation in the Reflections Program is a great way for students to explore and learn about various art forms. Creating art is a valuable learning process that challenges students to use their critical thinking skills as well as their creative talents to create art that supports a specific theme.

The theme for the 2010-2011 National Reflections Program is “Together We Can…”
