The students are studying in certificate programs at JCC for the 2009-10 academic year as part of the Community College Initiative, a program sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State.
Student goals for an internship include observing and practicing skills gained in a professional setting, improving workplace communication, and gaining a better understanding of the American workplace so that they will return home better equipped to succeed in their chosen fields.
Heather Murphy, coordinator of global education and outreach at JCC, said the internships are valuable experiences for both the students and area employers.
“JCC’s international students have varied experiences and knowledge and can offer fresh perspectives, skills, energy and creative ideas to an organization,” said Murphy.
“Interns can provide additional assistance in times of peak demand and hosting one can create good public relations within the community.”
Fields of interest include non-profit management, particularly educational organizations or those working with the needy or the disabled; local government and civil service, management and financial services; computer programming and maintenance; graphic design; small business management; and air conditioning, heating, and refrigerator repair.
