Phil Matthews announced today that he is running for Wake County Commissioner. He served as a Garner City Councilman for eight years from 1999 till 2007. “I am now ready to serve county wide to provide a strong Conservative voice for the citizens of Wake County”, Matthews said.

“I have always taken on the tough issues and stood up for the people. As County Commissioner I will take a stand on NO TAX INCREASES. With these tough economic times government must adhere to a strong working budget like the families of our county do. Our citizens cannot continue to have tax increases on their property. Government must live within its means.

I have a strong record of supporting our Police, Fire, EMS, and Rescue Departments and understand what it is like to crawl into a burning house at 3:00 in the morning not knowing if you will make it out. As a former volunteer fireman/first responder I can relate to these agencies for the long hours, training, and commitment to the job. I am sensitive to their issues,

As your County Commissioner I will offer up and encourage my fellow Commissioners ideas to help small businesses grow and be successful. This will provide jobs which are so badly needed in our area. We can do this by working with Chambers of Commerce and town agencies throughout the county.

I will also work with the Wake County School Board to insure the children of Wake County get the quality education they need to get ahead in life. I will pay close attention to the concerns of the parents of our school children as we set our priorities. We can work together to make our school system even better,” said Matthews.

I will be traveling throughout the county over the coming months sharing my message, meeting the people, and most important listening to what they have to say. I look forward to representing all the citizens of Wake County and be a Commissioner they can believe in,” added Matthews.

Matthews is a Vietnam Veteran, Retired Major, and a life member of the VFW. He is also a graduate of Central Carolina Community College. He and his wife Becky are residents of Garner and are active members of Raleigh First Church of the Nazarene.
