Bengal, Soren Ferrell went undefeated for the third time in individual tournament competition this season capturing the first place medal in the 189 pound weight class. Soren marched on to the first place finish scoring consecutive pins over Wesley Kanabrocki of Overhills (1:58), Jeremy Tart of Triton (1:00), and Peter Na of NC School of Science (5:08). In the final and championship match Soren defeated Caleb Killion, of Wakefield in a 2-1 decision victory. This recent 1st place finish brings Soren’s season record to 23 wins and one loss. In the 23 wins, Soren has scored 17 pins.
Robert Fernandez (112 lbs) and Jahel Carter (152 lbs), each took third place in the tournament. Robert easily defeated Mason Skeistaitis of Overhills, scoring a major decision, 16-2, but was tripped up by Frankie Jimenez, West Johnston for a 7-2 loss before going on to score decisive wins over Shane Moore of Enloe (Fall 0:30), Chang Lee of Seventy-First (Technical Fall 15-0), and Shaquille Ricks of Nash Central (Fall 3:13). Robert’s season record is 23-7 with nine wins by pins.
Jahel Carter’s road to third place included a victory by major decision (15-1) over Quinzell Kimble of Southern Durham, lost to Alfredo Corbett of Overhills (12-0), and a first period pin (1:34) over Branson Kinsey of the NC School Of Science And Math. In this season Jahel has scored nine pins for a record of 17-7.
Jarrod Miller took the fourth place medal in the 135 pound weight class with a record of two wins and two losses. Jarrod defeated Jake Young of West Johnston 6-4, and David Ji, Enloe 12-3. Jarrod’s losses were to Larnell Egerton of Seventy-First and Sean Helms of Southern Durham. Jarrod has a season record of 23 and 15, with 10 victories by pin.
Soren, Robert, Jahel, and Jarrod are team co-captains, so it is fitting that they lead the team in scoring this past weekend. This fifth place finish surpasses the Bengals best previous sixth place finish in individual tournament competition. Unfortunately it did not come without some cost. Heavy weight Duncan Jordan was injured in his first match of the day and was unable to finish the tournament.
