Shot falls short

A young Lady Bengals team came excruciatingly close to finishing off Panther Creek (5-11, 4-5) at home on Friday night and notching conference win number two. But Shebria Kersey’s last second shot – a shot that would have sent the game to overtime – fell just short as the Catamounts excaped Fuquay-Varina with a 44-42 win.

“Everyone one of our games has been like this,” Fuquay coach Mardy Cutchin said. “We’re getting there.”

He said this game was eerily similar to the two teams’ first meeting, a 47-44 Panther Creek win on December 1. In that game, Fuquay also took a five point lead into intermission. He told his players in the locker room at halftime that they could expect a Panther Creek run, and that’s exactly what happened. The Catamounts blitzed Fuquay with a 19-4 third quarter run to seize the lead. But Bengals sophomore Curisa Johnson would have something to say before the night was done. Johnson scored 10 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to put Fuquay (3-12, 1-9) into position for the final shot.

“I felt like we were losing and we needed to pick up the intensity and come back,” Johnson said. “We needed to pick up our defense and not give up.”

Cutchin said he nearly sees a mirror image when he looks at Panther Creek. The young Catamounts have been building gradually and they’re finally getting over the hump to some wins. Cutchin said his young team, led by freshmen, Camille Baker and Kersey and Johnson, a sophomore, are really close to putting things together in the Tri-9.

“We’ve been in every game this year,” Cutchin said. “We’ve had our shots. These two programs right here – they’re coming around. I think you’re going to start seeing a little reversal from the top to the bottom teams. That’s a good basketball team he’s got right there. And they’re young just like we are. If you look at our three scorers, two of them are freshmen and one’s a sophomore. That’s where our points are coming from.”

Fuquay-Varina triumphed in overtime on Friday night at Panther Creek. Dominique Byrd scored 11 and Isaac Daniel added nine as Fuquay won, 48-46. The Bengals enter exam week at 4-13 (2-8 Tri-9).
