Bengal, Soren Ferrell went undefeated during the tournament and captured the first place trophy in the 189 pound weight class. Soren scored early falls over Alib of DSA (Durham School of Arts) and Barrier of Mt Pleasant to advance to the semi finals where he defeated Felton of Sanderson High by a score of 2-1. The final and championship match with Navey of West Lincoln, ended with Soren winning in dramatic fashion, scoring the final takedown for a 6-2 victory. This is Soren’s second 1st place finish in as many tournaments.
Jarrod Miller took the 4th place medal in the 135 pound weight class with wins over Jenkins of DSA (16-7) and Egerton of Northern Vance (4-3), and MaCarthy of Southeast Raleigh (Fall 2:27). Jarrod went 3-2 for the tournament with losses to Bean of Cary and Hunter of Mt Pleasant.
Robert Fernandez (112 lbs), Chris Guimond (140lbs), and Jahel Carter (160 lbs), each captured 5th place medals in their respective weight classes to help secure the Bengals sixth place finish.
This was the Bengals best finish in this tournament in some years. Last year the team finished 11th place in this tournament. This 6th place finish is their best individual tournament finish this year. They previously finished 11th in two other individual tournaments. The Bengals are a young team with a few returning starters and many new faces, but they have worked hard and managed to avoid injuries that can often set a team back.
