Mike Dorman of Military Missions in Action recevied a check for $11,900 from the Capital Quilters Guild. This money was raised for MMIA’s OPERATION SEMPER FI, to assist a young U.S. Marine Corp veteran who is severely physically challenged after being wounded in combat in Iraq. This project will add a first floor master bedroom and bath, including specialized equipment, to his family home in Lillington.

After hearing both the heart-warming and heart-breaking stories told by Mike Dorman, the founder of Military Missions in Action, the 350 member guild worked closely this year with MMIA selling raffle tickets for “Country Village”, a large bed quilt pieced and quilted by 11 guild members. The guild also held their second annual Quilt Auction, which took place on Wake County Heritage Day at Historic Oak View County Park. Guild members made over 80 quilts for the auction and over 400 items for the boutique. No one is more thrilled than the guild members are with the success of their venture. Both the quilt guild and MMIA are appreciative of the support of Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces. Wake County Heritage Day is a county fair type event featuring live animals, antique farm equipment displays, heritage crafts, live music, antique cars, carriage rides, and much more. Heritage Day is presented in conjunction with the 4-H Youth Fair Day.

The guild is hard at work on next year’s Heritage Day Auction. The raffle quilt is in the making a charity partner will be selected soon, and quilts and boutique items will soon start arriving from our amazing guild members.
