For the first time in its history, Wake Tech has begun to offer haircuts, highlights, and other such services to the general public. Wake Tech’s salon-style cosmetology lab opened its doors, as the first students in the College’s new Cosmetology and Esthetics programs advance to the “customer service” phase of their training,

Wake Tech President Stephen Scott was happy to show his support and his confidence in the students’ training by being the very first to get a haircut. “We’re always pleased to launch new courses of study,” Scott says, “particularly ones in such high demand. I’m proud to be here - and I’m very pleased with my haircut!

Students first learn the basics of combing, cutting and styling by performing work on mannequins in the beginner lab. After 300 hours of training, students progress to the advanced lab, where they hone their technical and customer service skills.

Katie Walsh is one of the first students to earn advanced status, and was selected to perform the first haircut. “Even though I felt prepared, I was really nervous about that first cut,” says Walsh, “but afterwards, I thought, ‘I can do this!’”

Fifty-three students are enrolled in the Cosmetology and Esthetics programs, which began classes this fall. Esthetics services include facials, waxes and other skin care treatments. To learn more or to make an appointment, call (919) 866-7100. For program information
