Coach Rob Morrison led the 97 FVAA Flames to victory once again in the Triangle Futbol Club, 2009 Columbus Day Classic in Burlington, NC. Saturday started out with a win against the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) Hurricanes (1-0). That afternoon, the Flames battled the Charlotte United Futbol Club (CUFC) Lyons in a highly physical game which resulted in a hard fought (2-1) victory for the Flames. This team proved to be one of the toughest in the tournament and it was inevitable that the two would meet again. The semi-final game Sunday morning against another CUFC team, the Crystal Palace, ended in the third win for the Flames (4-0). After all of the results were in, the Flames met the CUFC Lyons again for the final game as originally anticipated. Both teams were fired up and ready for an all-out war. The CUFC Lyons scored first, but the Flames did not let this inhibit their desire for gold, and they came right back and tied up the game. The Flames scored again taking the lead (2-1). Unfortunately, the Lyons tied it up right before the end of regulation time. The teams fought hard in double overtimes which resulted in no score, so the contest ended in a shoot out. The Flames fired up and won the tournament with penalty kicks. The team work, physical play, and overall spirit of the Flames are the factors that set them apart and have contributed to their impressive record so far this season. The Flames look forward to future successes, hopefully in the upcoming Lake Norman Fall Classic in November.
