GARNER, NC – October 5, 2009 – Singing since the age of five, Kayla Teems is just one of several students performing in the VPS Student Showcase on October 24, 2009… and after how well the first one went for her, she’s just as excited this time around.

“I loved it!” Kayla says of her performance in last November’s Showcase. “We all had the same goal in mind – we were all going to do the best we could. We were all rooting for each other.” She goes on to say that performing in the first Showcase helped prepare her for the ability to sing in a public setting in which the members of the audience weren’t just her family and her friends. In her words, “It was an adrenaline rush!”

Kayla began singing in her school choir program where she was selected to be a member of the North Carolina Music Honor Society. As she transitioned to high school, she continued performing in choir where for two years in a row she was also selected to be a member of the elite group of vocal students that performed at North Carolina’s “All State” event.

Two years ago, Kayla began looking for more formal training and with each teacher she researched most were heavy on the classical training, which according to Kayla is not her forte. She much prefers to sing Country Music, the chosen genre of her hero, Reba McIntyre. Kayla came across Rozlyn Sorrell in her research noting that Rozlyn was open to her students singing a variety of music genres. Ms. Sorrell took her on and Kayla has been growing in her craft ever since.

Today, Kayla credits Rozlyn for teaching her all aspects of the vocal medium but specifically to sing with emotion and stage presence as a soloist rather than a member of a group such as a school choir.

What most people don’t know about Kayla is that she has a visual impairment but that doesn’t stop her from perfecting her talent. In fact, Kayla says that it pushes her to be a better singer and a better student, and she’s more than happy to share her voice when asked too!

Vocal Precision Studio Student Showcase is the vehicle used to highlight the singing skills and vocal accomplishments learned throughout the calendar year. It is what many of her students strive for. Performing in the Showcase caps off their hard work and determination. The students sing from a wide variety of music - pop, country, R&B, contemporary gospel, to name a few. For many of them, it is the first time they have had an opportunity to perform on a stage with musicians in front of a LIVE audience.

Vocal Precision Student Showcase will take place on October 24th, 2009 at 8pm at Garner Historic Auditorium.
