OCTOBER A NIGHTMARE FOR CAMPBELL FOES: Campbell has not lost a game during the month of October in nearly two years, compiling a string of 15-straight wins or draws. CU stands 13-0-2 in its last 15 games during October, since a 3-2 loss at Lipscomb on Oct. 13, 2007. During that stretch, Campbell has defeated North Carolina twice in addition to an 11-0-2 mark against league foes, and has out-scored its October competition by a 33-14 margin.
FRESHMAN IMPACT: Freshmen provided all five Campbell goals in last week’s 1-0-1 trip to Nashville. Justin Smith scored career goals one and two (one in each game), while Ben Iiames tallied his first career marker to tie the Lipscomb contest with just 3:28 remaining in the second half.
Keegan Terry notched his first career goal at Belmont, and Mitchell Cardenas recorded his first career winner. Cardenas set up the game-tying goal in last Thursday’s 2-2 OT draw at Lipscomb then added a goal and assist in a 3-1 victory Saturday at Belmont. Keeper Ryan Amons also earned his first collegiate victory and lowered his goals-against average to 1.66. Smith has at least one point (goal or assist) in each of the last three games.
A-SUN SUCCESS: Campbell has run its record in A-Sun regular season games to 26-4-5 since the start of the 2005 season, best among league members. The Camels are unbeaten in their last 14 Atlantic Sun regular season games (12-0-2). The last A-Sun team to beat the Camels in the regular year was Lipscomb by a 3-2 margin on Oct. 13, 2007 in Nashville.
HOME SWEET HOME: Campbell owns a 27-10-0 record at the Eakes Athletic Complex since the start of the 2005 season, but is 0-3 this year. Included among those 27 victories are three against nationally-ranked foes.
THE USC UPSTATE SERIES: Campbell leads the all-time series 3-1 and is 2-0 vs. Upstate since the Spartans joined the A-Sun in 2007. Last year at Spartanburg, Kyle Proctor, Jason Keever and Bryan Dornseif all scored in the second half of a 3-0 Camel victory. In 2007 at Buies Creek, Richard Jata tallied the game’s only goal with 35 seconds remaining in the second half.
AT A GLANCE: Thirteen different Camels have registered at least one point (goal or assist) through 9 games... CU out-shot Richmond (Sept. 26) by a 19-6 margin (12-3 on goal), but dropped a 2-1 decision despite Khalil Johnson’s 1st goal of the season... After starting the year 1-4, USC Upstate is unbeaten (2-0-1) in their last three games with wins over Georgia Southern (3-1) and Presbyterian (2-1 in OT) before the draw at ETSU. Against ETSU, Upstate was outshot by a 33-6 margin, but only 6 Buc shots were on target, all saved by keeper Pat Regna, who ranks 2nd in the A-Sun in GAA (1.17).
NEXT: Campbell hosts ETSU on Saturday (4:00 p.m.). Fans who bring a ticket stub from the Campbell-Dayton football game (1:00 p.m.) will receive free admission to the soccer match.
