NCSU Centennial Campus is site of free, family fun

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 18) – Families in the Triangle can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities on Saturday, Sept. 26, when the National Hunting and Fishing Day Celebration comes to the Centennial Campus Center for Wildlife Education.

The celebration, which runs from noon to 5 p.m., will feature more than 25 hands-on activities and demonstrations that highlight fishing, hunting and wildlife conservation in North Carolina. A few of the activities and exhibits include:

•Live wolves

•Archery range

•Pellet rifle range

•Laser-shot hunting simulation

•Campfire cooking

•Outdoor survival skills

•Falconry

•Fishing at Lake Raleigh

A snake exhibit presented by Grover Barfield, director of the Carolinas Reptile Rescue and Education Center, will show visitors how to identify the venomous and non-venomous snakes of North Carolina.

Boy Scouts can fulfill requirements needed to earn merit badges, including:

•Fishing

•Fly-fishing

•Mammal Study

•Reptiles

•Rifle shooting

•Outdoor survival

Participants 10 to 18 years old who visit all exhibits and complete a checklist will be entered into a grand prize drawing at 4 p.m. Random prizes and giveaways will take place throughout the event.

The Centennial Campus Center for Wildlife Education is located at 1751 Varsity Drive, Raleigh in the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission headquarters on N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus. It is easily accessible from Avent Ferry Road and Centennial Parkway, and convenient to Interstate 40.

The National Hunting and Fishing Day Celebration occurs during Take A Child Outside Week, a national initiative spearheaded by the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, which kicks off Thursday, Sept. 24 and runs through Sept. 30. The week is designed to help break down obstacles that keep children from exploring the natural world and to encourage children and adults to spend time together outdoors.

The National Hunting and Fishing Day Celebration will be one of six free events supported by the Commission in celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day on Sept. 26. For more information on times, locations and activities for all events, go to www.ncwildlife.org.
