The incident occurred at the Hess gas station in Coats located at the intersection of N.C. Highway 27 and N.C. Highway 55 around 3:30 p.m.
According to reports, Culross was backing up her van when 75-year-old Joann Bacon of Stewart Street in Coats was walking across the parking lot to pay for her gas. She backed her vehicle into Bacon who was pronounced dead when police and rescue units arrived.
Chief Eddie Jaggers said Culross backed completely over the victim.
Upon further investigation by the Coats Police Department, Culross was charged with second-degree murder and driving while impaired.
Because three children were in the vehicle at the time of the accident, police also charged her with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and three counts each of child abuse.
Chief Jaggers stated the additional charges were because of alcohol being involved and the small children in the vehicle.
