A Garner man died Wednesday in a freak accident when a tree fell and crushed a car he was riding in shortly before 3 p.m.

According to Trooper Eric Hunt of the highway patrol, Dejuan Green, 21, was a front seat passenger in a vehicle driven by John Wolff of Raleigh, when the tree fell on the car. Brandy Donovan of Garner, who was Green's girlfriend, was a passenger in the backseat.

The accident occurred on Old Stage Road.

Both Wolff, 32, and Donovan, 25, were injured and transported to WakeMed. Green was pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to reports, Wolff was trapped inside the car while Donavan was able to climb out through a window.

Firefighters from Garner and Fuquay-Varina responded to the scene, along with EMS units from Garner, Cary and Wake County.

Investigators said the accident is being blamed on the tree's age and condition. According to reports, the tree measured 24 to 26 inches in diameter.

Donavan's first husband died two years ago as the result of a car accident. They had four children. Donovan and Green, who have a six-month-old daughter, were expecting a second child next year. The unborn child is fine.

The couple had no insurance.

Friends and family members have plans to set up a fund for Donovan and her children as soon as possible.
