Fuquay-Varina High School Interact Club members have written, directed and produced a short film to call attention to the role of friends and bystanders in dating violence. The film encourages individuals to speak out when they see dating violence.
The club’s film initiative was prompted by an invitation from InterAct of Wake County to participate in their film initiative. InterAct is a private, non-profit, United Way agency that provides safety, support and awareness to victims and survivors of domestic violence and rape/sexual assault.
Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month is a national effort to raise awareness about abuse in teen and 20-something relationships and promote programs that prevent it during the month of February. The repercussions of teen dating violence are impossible to ignore; they hurt not just the young people victimized but also their families, friends, schools and communities.
Throughout February, organizations and individuals nationwide are coming together to highlight the need to educate young people about dating violence, teach healthy relationship skills and prevent the devastating cycle of abuse.
Members of the Fuquay-Varina High School Interact Club will be joining teens from across Wake County on Feb. 28, at the Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education in Raleigh for a screening of independent films created by Wake County youth.
These Fuquay-Varina High School teens are taking a stand against teen dating violence. According to the 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance 9.4 percent of students nationwide had been hit, slapped or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend in the last year. Nationwide, eight percent of students had ever been physically forced to have sexual intercourse. Overall, the prevalence of having been forced to have sexual intercourse was higher among female (11.8 percent) than male (4.5 percent) students.
The Fuquay-Varina High School Interact Club is sponsored by both the Fuquay-Varina Rotary Club and the Fuquay-Varina Downtown Rotary Club. Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and raise most of their own project funds.
