The Wake County Public School System has scheduled teacher workdays and delayed openings for schools for Election Day, this coming Tuesday. The school district urges motorists to drive with care near schools due to the increased traffic at schools that serve as voting sites.

There will be no school for students in the district’s 110 traditional calendar schools and five modified calendar schools, but teachers at these schools will have a workday. The district’s 50 year-round schools will operate on a two-hour delay. The Board of Education approved this schedule as part of the 2012-13 calendar at its May 3, 2011 meeting.

Many WCPSS schools serve as polling sites for the election, and Presidential elections draw increased traffic and people to school campuses. In the 2008 general elections with the U.S. President on the ballot, Wake County voters cast 444,013 ballots. In the 2010 general elections without the presidency on the ballot, voters cast 279,946 ballots.

School officials note that the largest volume of traffic usually occurs in the morning hours.
