Is that bluegrass music in Centennial Square? Why are there people drumming and dancing on Broad Street? It must be “Fall for the Arts,” the Fuquay-Varina Arts Council’s fall festival showcasing local artists and providing creative fun for the whole family.

Fall for the Arts was born last Autumn when the Fuquay-Varina Arts Council created the event to kick off “Art after Dark,” their regular art walk on the second Friday of every month in Fuquay-Varina. A year later, the art walk continues to grow, and “Fall for the Arts” is back, bigger and better than ever, with some new events and activities coming to Fuquay-Varina for the first time

One exciting addition to this year’s event will be a picker’s jam, where local musicians are invited to come and jam with others. The jam is open to all stringed instruments, and is unscripted. The musicians and music determine the shape of the jam. The picking will be at Centennial Square on the corner of S. Main and E. Academy St from 5-9 p.m.

On Broad Street from 6:30 – 8 p.m., you will find a drumming, hooping, and dancing circle, where all are invited to join. Drums will be available to borrow, and all ages and levels of experience are welcome.

An artist and crafter’s market on Raleigh Street will showcase a variety of work by local artists. “We have so many talented artists in our community, and we want to create an opportunity for them to share what they do. So often, we are more familiar with the artwork, music, or writing of someone living half way around the world than we are with the artists living right down the street,” says Denise Burnette, the director of the Fuquay-Varina Arts Council. “We are seeing that change, as local artists are coming to us and saying ‘I want to get involved.’ It is very exciting to see.”

Fall for the Arts is organized as a “Potluck” of creativity, with a variety of organizations and businesses getting involved to showcase the Arts as well. The downtown Rotary Club will bring their live music event “Tunes at Sunset” to Fall for the Arts, while the Fuquay – Varina Community Market will be decorating pumpkins and sharing information about their future plans. Visitors can also view local art at over 10 business locations while participating in an “Art Scavenger Hunt” with prizes to be won. There will even be some Rickshaws in town for the night to transport visitors around the two downtown areas.

Add to the event a Classic Volkswagen Cruise-In, museum tours, artist demonstrations, plenty of creative activities for the kids, and even a bounce house or two, and you have an evening of fun for the whole family. The event will take place downtown on the Fuquay and Varina sides of town from 5-9 p.m. Most events and activities are free. For a full list of events and locations, visit www.FVartscouncil.org.

There is a new art program for ages 3 to 10 year olds at the Fuquay-Varina community center. It cost $6.00 a class. Check out www.fvparks.org under youth art!
