Never has there been a more appropriate time to pray for the nation, according to speakers at the National Day of Prayer event in Fuquay last week.

On May 2, many Fuquay-Varinians gathered to share time in prayer for the nation, state and local community.

“This world needs your intervention,” Pastor Brad Talley of Grace Community Church prayed. “Lord, this nation needs your intervention.

“Forgive us, Lord, for failing to show who you are in reality.”

Guest speaker Christy Christopher, national prayer coordinator for Just Joy Ministries, touched on the nation’s need for prayer. She said there is a need for prayer whether or not everyone agrees with the current government.

“God has not given us permission to murmur and complain,” she said.

But, the world is facing continuously more darkness from sin and prayer for individuals is equally as important.

The former Fuquay-Varina resident for nine years said prayer is a two-way dialog and people have to talk as well as listen to God.

“We need an intimate relationship with Him,” she told the crowd. “Do we know His voice in our lives?”

Also, prayer cannot be just for surface issues. Christopher said there is a need to pray for root problems. And she said people can make a difference in the lives of others with prayer.

“Don’t think that you don’t count. Don’t think that you don’t matter,” she said. “God has put in us His very presence.”

Individuals must listen to what God is sharing with them. And they must be ready to move.

“When we understand what God wants to do, we’ll stop spinning our wheels and start moving mountains,” Christopher said.

“Start with us. Lord, start with me,” Tonya Nelson of Hand of Hope Pregnancy Resouce Center prayed. “God help us to do something.”

The National Day of Prayer event has been held locally at the Town Hall since Fuquay-Varina Mayor John Byrne started the position.

He’s proud to be able to hold the event on town property and share it with so many others.

“I kneel down and say my prayers every night,” Byrne said. “I do it because it’s who I am.”
