Girls in action definitely describes the scene at Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Education Park (CHJEEP) in Fuquay Varina on Sunday, May 6, when Girl Scout Troop 199 held their Pawz 4 a Causz event which promoted animal health, wellness, and education – the focus of the troop’s Bronze Award project.
Members of Troop 199 earned their Bronze Award by encouraging the public to bring their pets and walk the CHJEEP paths, offering educational information on and for pets, conducting a non-monetary pet goods drive that animal shelters need and accept and donating those goods to them, arranging with Fuquay Varina Parks & Recreation to clean the park, donating bird houses built by the troop, and holding the Pawz 4 a Causz event at the CHJEEP promoting public awareness of this pet friendly park all in a setting of fun with games, contests, prizes, and giveaways such as homemade doggy biscuits and handmade pet rocks.
Leaders, Kristina Carpenter and Zena Farkas, proudly announce the recipients of the Girl Scout Bronze Award: Kaleigh Barefoot, student of Willow Springs Elementary School; Brianna Barrow-Lee, student of Dillard Drive Elementary School ; Katie Carpenter, student of Willow Springs Elementary School; Miccala Church, student of Fuquay Varina Elementary School ; Veronica Farkas, student of Herbert Akins Elementary School; Jaida Huhn, student of Conn Elementary School; Savannah Jackson, student of Fuquay Varina Elementary School; and Gabriela Pelletier, student of Willow Springs Elementary School.
The Girl Scout Bronze Award, a leadership adventure, is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. In order to be eligible for the award, a girl must be in 4th or 5th grade (or equivalent), a registered Girl Scout Junior, and have completed a Junior Journey.
The Bronze Award consists of building a Girl Scout Junior team, exploring the community looking for a way to contribute positively to the lives of others, choosing a community service project, making a plan, putting the plan into motion, and spreading the word.
Girl Scout Troop 199 is part of the North Carolina Coastal Pines Council and Wake Area 15 Service Unit.
