Family & Friends United will be holding the second Annual Family & Friends Day on Oct. 6 to honor the memory of Jammie S. Street. Street died due to domestic violence while dropping her children off in a church parking lot on Oct. 7, 2009. In order to remember Street and educate the community on domestic violence, Family & Friends United requests donations to fund the Annual Day. Family & Friends United was founded in 2010 by a small group of Street’s own family and friends. Street’s childhood friend, Zakia Jones, and older sister, Keisha Hooker, make a majority of the organization’s decisions together. They hope to “Break the Silence” on domestic violence by providing victims and survivors with helpful information.

“They need to understand that they don’t have to stay in those situations,” says Jones. “They need to let someone know what’s going on.”

Jones grew up with Street and spoke to her on a daily basis, yet she never knew the danger her friend was in. Jones regrets the fact that she, like many other friends of domestic violence victims, found out too late about Jammie’s struggles.

Family & Friends United believes that “everyone is someone’s child no matter their age.” The non-profit organization believes that if their efforts in the annual day can save at least one child, they will consider themselves successful.

Jammie’s mother, Alfreda Street, gives her thanks to the community for their prayers and support after her daughter’s untimely death. “It’s been three years, but it’s still an ongoing process.”

Each year, Family & Friends United holds the Annual Family & Friends Day around the time of Jammie’s death day. This year’s activities will include a free annual walk and festival with entertainment, bounce houses, food, a speaker from the domestic violence awareness group InterAct, and much more. All proceeds will directly fund the cost of the event.

While immediate family and friends of Street solely funded the annual day in the past, the organization is now asking for community donations, to be turned in by Sept. 1. Checks should be payable to Family & Friends United and sent to 713 Papsworth Courth, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526. Credit card donations can be made at familyfriendsunited.weebly.com.

The event will take place in Falcon Park at 611 E. Academy Street in Fuquay-Varina. “It’s really about gathering, so kids can get out and enjoy the day,” said Alfreda Stree, “and it’s all in memory of Jammie.”
