The Fuquay Varina Lions Club held its 17th annual golf tournament at the beautiful Bentwinds Country Club on April 15. The weather was cool and cloudy, but the turnout was great and the Lions raised nearly $10,000 to help the blind.
Flight 1 was won by the Four Oaks Bank team of Jim Riley, Dallas Goldston, David Carroll and Zac Collins with a score of 55. Second place was won by the Evelyn’s Trouble team of Bob Chandler, Evelyn Kinlaw, Susan and Michael Walley. Third place went to the team organized by Donnie Reaves of Donnie Reaves, John Carroll, Johnny Reaves and Bob Hendrickson.
Flight 2 was won by the NCNG team of Charles Jackson, Dennis Roach, Peter Versfeld and David Dunmyre. Second place went to the Revels Turf and Tractor team of Turner Revels, Mike Koper, Dr. Bob Johnson and Tim Althaus. Third place was captured by the Williamson Insurance team of Wayne Williamson, Todd Freeman, Brian Veeder and Greg Tucker.
The third flight was won by the Capstone Bank team of Tommy Phillips, Hal Johnson, Mark Green and Joe Monk. Second place went to the team organized at Martin Marietta, Two pair of Socks of Steve Schammel, Ed Austin, John Schulte and Chris Umphlett. Third place was won by the Sheetz team of Charity Synder, Michael D’Andria, Marcia Frost and Jeff Martz.
Johnny Pittman won the longest drive competition for the men and Susan Walley had the longest drive for the women. Closest to the pin competition was won by Carter Williams, Ed Austin, Brian Veeder of the Williamson Insurance team and Donnie Reaves.
The Lions would like to thank all of the golfers and sponsors that made this a great day. They especially thank Jerry Baird and Wolfpackaging Industries for their generous gifts for the long drive competition and to John Heister Chevrolet for the hole-in-one prize. Thanks also to Krispy Kreme for their gifts and for providing coffee and donuts to the Lions, Harris-Teeter and Food Lion for providing water and soft drinks and Subway, Jersey Mikes and Rudino’s Pizza and Grinders for providing sandwiches, cookies and chips respectively.
