The Fuquay Varina Lions Club closed a very successful year under President Heather Allen with an Awards and Installation Banquet at the American Legion Hall on Johnson Pond Road. Lions Bob Griffith and Dan Houck were recognized for their work on the golf tournament and Christmas tree sales respectively. Eddie Davis received the Big Butt award for selling the biggest Christmas tree.
Lions Jim Semple, Terry Tutor, Brian Kostek, Tom Patton and Tom Taylor were given the William Woolard Partners in Service award. Lions Russ Brown, Bob Hammond and Bob Steepe were give the Jack Stickley award. Jack Stickley and William Woolard are both International Presidents of Lions International from North Carolina and the funds for both awards are used for humanitarian purposes in North Carolina.
Lion John Lilly was recognized with a Melvin Jones Fellowship, which is the highest award in the Lions International. Those funds are used to prevent blindness throughout the world. Donald Cotton was named the Lion of the Year for his dedicated service to the Lions Club.
The new officers for 2012- 2013 installed by District Governor Andy Lilliston were President Bob Steepe, vice presidents, Don Savino and Alan O’Shea. Tom Patton was installed as Secretary and Heather Allen is the new Treasurer. The Board of Directors serving for the coming year are Dan Houck, John Lilly, Donald Cotton and Terry Tutor. Jim Semple was installed as the Tail Twister and David Gray in the Lion Tamer for the new year.
The Lions would like to thank everyone who supported them this past year by buying a Christmas tree or supporting their golf tournament. Thanks to this support, the Lions were able to return $10,000 to needy individuals in Fuquay Varina and just over $11,000 to help the blind in North Carolina and Internationally.
