Billie Jo Leonka joined the ranks of many others when she was laid off from her job in June. Unlike many others, she saw being downsized as an opportunity to try something new.
“I finally decided once I became unemployed, now is the time I need to focus on those things that are more meaningful,” she said.
It is a big change from working in high finance with UBS (Swiss Banking), to taking a leap into the world of photography.
She calls herself a “professional amateur photographer” and focuses on nature. Her work is hung at Magnolia House Custom Framing on Main Street, Fuquay-Varina for the next month, Nov. 15-Dec. 15. Leonka said she is grateful that Shirley Hunsberger, owner of Magnolia Framing, for taking a chance on her.
“Now is not the time to sell things to people,” she said referring to the economy, “but, now is the time for me to try it.”
She has always enjoyed photography and her husband Gregg is supportive of her new venture. Leonka has faced tough times in the past. Five years ago she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. “I want people to know that just because you have MS you don’t have to stop living your life,” she said. “It is a manageable condition.”
No matter what obstacles come her way, she is ready. “Our attitude toward life determines life’s attitude toward us,” is her motto for living.
Leonka plans to grow her photography business and to take individual requests for photos.
