John Tedesco won the School Board District 2 seat by a landslide with 6,658 votes, 75.96 percent of the 8,765 votes cast, according to the Wake County Board of Elections unofficial results.

Tedesco’s opponent, Cathy Truitt, received 2,023 votes for nearly 23 percent of those cast in today’s election.

Tedesco won the most votes in the Oct. 6 election with nearly 49 percent, but because he did not receive the majority vote, the Board of Elections allowed a runoff. Truitt backed out of the runoff, but did not submit a letter of concession by the deadline.

Truitt said because it was clear forced busing was out with current District 2 Representative Horace Tart, she backed Tedesco.

Tedesco wanted to make sure parents of students in the free and reduced lunch program were reassured they are one of his top priorities. He said the Board will need to build a community consensus on schools and stabilize the assignment models.

Friends and family congratulated Tedesco at the Heather Hills Club, one of Garner’s polling places.

Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams said he was happy to see the School Board seat return to Garner.

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said. “It’s a plus.”

With the reelection of Kathy Behringer and Gra Singleton, Williams said he believes there will be a good working relationship between Garner and the School Board.

Tedesco will take office in December.
