It was a “day of giving” Thursday Dec. 17 at the Angier Post Office. The local post office hosted a Blood Drive in combination with a customer appreciation day.

December and January are the two lowest months for blood donation for the Red Cross. Rhonda Abernethy, postmaster of the Angier Post Office, thought it would be a good idea to host the Blood Drive to accommodate customers’ busy schedules.

“Everyone is coming to the Post Office at this time of year anyway. Why not offer a Blood Drive to anyone willing to take time from their busy schedules to donate. I enjoy hosting this Blood Drive because it gives me a chance to make a difference and tell customers we appreciate them by offering refreshments and free gift wrap in our lobby.”

The final number was 51 pints donated. Sixteen were first time donors. This number is always an important number as the Red Cross hopes these donors will continue a life of giving when a blood drive is available. Seventeen donors were USPS employees that took time out at an extremely busy time of year to donate. These seventeen employees were from a mixture of Angier, Fuquay-Varina, Lillington, Willow Spring and Garner.

Says Abernethy, “I encourage everyone to give blood every chance they get. I like to think that everyone that gave today made a difference to a loved one’s life. It could be yours....you never know when you or someone you know may need blood.”
