Harnett Central High School's senior star running back was the assumed target of vandalism in a fire during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Brian Baker's vehicle was damaged in the alleged arson, however, his father's Nissan Pathfinder was burned to the frame.

Angela McClure said she awoke when the family's dogs starting barking and growling around 4:20 a.m. After spotting a bright red glow in the living room area of their Duncan home, thinking there may be a brush fire, she went to the front door and discovered her spouse's vehicle engulfed in flames.

An article of clothing inadvertently left behind on Brian's vehicle had also started burning. Kenneth Baker, McClure's spouse, grabbed the item and was injured by the flames. He was later treated at WakeMed for first and second degree burns.

Due to an earlier incident, the couple believe their son was the target of arson. However, McClure quickly pointed out they have no suspects.

The crime has cast a shadow of fear over the family and some of the neighbors in the normally serene community along Wade-Stephenson Road.

"We do not sleep well knowing that Brian has had a threat against him and his vehicle has been sought out," McClure said. "We feel like it was an attempted murder."

McClure said all three of their vehicles had been doused with gasoline and the fire marshal suspected arson.

"All three vehicles could have blown up and they were not parked far from the house," she said.

"It's a nightmare."

Not only did the family not have insurance to cover arson, they are now very concerned for their son's safety and fear that someone may try to harm him.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individuals involved.

"If you saw an individual or individuals between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, in a vehicle or on foot around Wade-Stephenson, Cokesbury, or Truelove roads, please contact the sheriff's department," said McClure.

"Please help us find the people involved," said McClure. "This could have been your family. These are your neighbors in Duncan."
