Fuquay Varina High School Senior Paul Thomas Kenney has been awarded the Eagle Scout Award upon completion of his Board of Review, the 102nd Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Paul is a Venturer with Venturing Crew 75, a part of the Occoneechee Council and sponsored by the Fuquay Varina American Legion Post 116.

The Rank of Eagle is earned by less than 2 percent of the youth after completing 21 Merit badges and an extensive service project, and several hours of community service and unquestionable moral character as witnessed by folks in the community.

Paul is working on his college plans and through his continued service to God, his country, and other people by following the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law, he continues to support the community as a Crew Guide. Additionally, Paul is an active member of the Amangi-Newo Chapter of the Occoneechee Lodge, Order of the Arrow.

As a member of Venture Crew 75, he has participated in several High Adventure and local excursions, with the culmination of his Eagle Service project. The project that he completed was building a cosmetic boundary fence for the American Legion.

Since the first Eagle Scout Award was awarded in 1912 to Arthur Eldred, there has been 2,151,024 Boys who have earned the Nation’s top respected award. The first 100 young men to receive the award took only 36 months to obtain the rank. By 1914, Scouts from 19 states had obtained the rank. In 1910, the largest number of Scouts who earned the Award in one year was 56, 176.

The Award has produced some of our Nation’s most notable leaders. Of the 312 pilots and scientists selected as astronauts since 1959, at least 207 have been identified as having been Scouts or active in Scouting. Of the 24 men to travel to the moon on the Apollo 8 and Apollo 10 through 17 missions, 20 were Scouts, including 11 of the 12 moonwalkers and all three members of the Apollo 13 crew.

Venture Crew 75 is a High Adventure Unit for young men and women aged 14-20 Sponsored by the American Legion Post 116. They meet the first and third Sunday’s of the month starting at 2 p.m.
